If you kid is a little bit older, reading on their own and has homework, then there's one option which leaps out. This is the design where there is a bed on top and a comfortable seat and work area below.
With this design the seat will pull out into a single bed, pretty great for either sleepovers, or for just lounging around reading. The work area is quite small, but this does not seem to be a problem. The configuration means that the futon can always be used as an extended work area, if they're referencing books or maps then with a swivel desk chair they can just spread their materials over the futon and write at the desk.
There's a third feature which is similar to the set up with a work station, but in this area there's storage instead of a desk. Having a separate desk may seem more realistic at first look . This is an adult way of looking at the setup. Talk about this option with your children and you will possibly find that they are not so keen on it. By having drawers and storage space underneath the top bunk it makes the area underneath less fun. If you prefer to maximise your storage area then you probably be better of with a mid height bed with storage, rather than a bunk bed with futon?
Which ever bunk bed with futon design you choose it is important to discuss it with your children and to make sure that they are happy. It is also a good idea to invest in a few new bedding and accessories to make it that little bit more special and personal.
